[Ansteorra-archery] advice for 3 kings'

That is about the case of it except that they sometimes share the space with equestrian activities. It is one of the few places besides Canton in this area that has enough space that you can safely do a clout shoot.

As has been previously stated, however, crossbow safety with something like this is questionable at best since all it takes is a pothole or bump just right to cause the crossbow to inadvertently be fired. Although it sounds like fun I would be reluctant to exclude crossbows.

A few years ago we did do a version of this there in which archers (including crossbowmen) had to move from position to position shooting at various targets and distances. You had a set time to shoot all the targets and were only allow 6 shots on 4 targets and you had to move position down the firing line between shots forcing the stance to be broken. It was thought to be pretty good at evening the differences between the two types of equipment. And you were either good with your equipment or you weren't.

The pickup truck is actually a pretty viable idea and possibly the simplest (and just plain sounds like fun). As far as trees, I dont remember there being any down there once you got down the bank. Just open space for quite a ways.

Loch Soillier did something similar 7 or 8 years ago. Basically they had 3 or 4 various targets setup around the perimeter of meadow. They had the archer kneel in the bed of a F150 pickup truck and it drive around the meadow slowly. As soon as it crossed a certain point well away form the bystanders the archers were told they could start shooting and they go the chance to take as many shots at the targets as they wanted to while they were moving past the targets. At a certain point again well before getting back near the bystanders the truck would stop the archer would get out and go collect their arrows and total their score while the truck went back and got setup for another archer. They were cautious enough that I didn't have any real safety concerns but I sure wished that there had been some real good padding in the bed of that truck to kneel on.

Sir Henri did something a few years ago in Stonebridge Keep where he basically made a sawhorse pony on wheels that the archer set astride and it was pulled slowly across the firing line while the archer was shooting.

I didn't have any great safety concerns with the above. There were very experiences marshals present with experienced archers and they took great care but I might have had more concerns if there were more novice archers.

I also had some concerns that these types of shoots might leave some archers out, perhaps the very novice, or perhaps the handicapped who aren't able to crawl into or sit astride the contraption.

I had considered that something like this might be better done by placing the archer on a bucking barrel. Either one suspended on ropes like the one I had as a boy or one on a big spring like the old playground horses you used to see. Put a saddle on it if you want. Have it high enough that the archers feet are off the ground when sitting bent kneed as you would on a horse and that way they could always stand up as needed. If you feel that simply having them sit with feet off the ground on a contraption that is going to sway around a bit as they move while shooting at a moving target isn't hard enough then attach a good to the bucking barrel and tug on it a bit.

The bucking barrel can be setup between 3 or 4 posts firmly in the ground or between trees. Garage door springs at the tops of the ropes and the last 2 feet or so of rope actually use chain and quicklinks so that it can be quickly adjusted by taking up a link at a time when needed

The heavy marshal and seneschal for Rosenfeld have thrown out a suggestion for 3 Kings this year and I'm not certain that I can back this one up. I'm new at this and tend to lean in the "over-safe" direction. Your help and advice would be appreciated.

It has been proposed that a "cart scenario" be set up to challenge the archers. The basic task is to shoot from a moving hay cart at assorted targets. This information is sketchy at the moment but I'm seeing a wagon of some sort with a seat or rail. The cart would be pulled and the archer must shoot at assorted targets.

My concern is the bumping and jostling issue. Could this cause misfires with the arrow/bolt going in whatever direction? What kind of safety zone will be required? Seated, standing or you choose? How do I keep the person pulling the cart out of the danger zone?

Again, this is very much in the planning stages. I am seeking your wisdom to see ifthis idea is even possible and can be performed safely. I look forward to your suggestions and advice.
