Caladin, here's my two counter-points:
1- Depending on the number of archers present, your tactic might work 
with less than the total number of archers. Half, or even 2/3 might give 
you the weight of fire you want, without stripping the line of it's 
missile support completely.

2- You might consider forming this archer unit with a screen of shields 
and spears, so that it looks more like just another
reserve unit than a huge bass of bowman. It might not fool the enemy 
completely, but if it keeps their commanders at the line from  
countering  the move, you might have a better chance of getting your 
hoped-for reaction. Unless, of course, you want them to notice all those 
bows in one place...
