[Ansteorra-archery] Royal Huntsman - CA and TA Champions?

A very valid point, there is nothing to stop us from borrowing some combat arrows (I have enough bots) a helm or two and let some people give it a try at our next event. They may like it want to do more of it.

Just a thought...but not being a combat archer myself does not limit my ability to inspire, outfit, assemble a unit of combat archers should the Crown require it of me.

The last three baronial archery tournaments we hosted had between 20-25 individuals compete and an additional 20-25 shoot just for fun. The baronial event before these that was limited to authorized combat archers only had three people compete. To borrow a helm and combat arrows is not necessarily a problem but to state that the winner is expected to compete in combat archery does limit the people willing to compete for the honor of being the Royal Huntsman.

Good points!

I believe that you are correct that the majority of TA participants do not do CA and never will. I also know that there are CA participants that do not do TA.

Perhaps the solution may be as simple as an overall declaration that the Royal Huntsman is:
A. The Champion TA for the Kingdom, or
B. The Champion CA for the Kingdom, or
C. The King's representative of all forms of archery within the Kingdom and as such must be able to perform and compete in all areas.

This would be a tough pill for many people to swallow and might upset some people that believe that it should only be TA or CA. But as a wise person stated, it is not possible to make everyone happy.

I believe that Arthur's thinking (please correct me if I am wrong) is that he is trying to figure out the best way to make as many people happy as possible and to have as many people involved in some form of archery as possible.

The more people that we have involved in archery the better it is for all of us.

I also agree that the Kingdom MM and the reigning RH should do their best to work with the King & Queen to help educate them and help them understand our portion of the SCA and what some of our traditions and concerns are.

Vincenti

> The one thing that I think would help to increase the reception and prestige of the Huntsmen competition is to ensure that our Crowns understand the nature of the community, and the different flavors within it.  Not all Crowns are going to realize how few of the archers competing in there Huntsmen tourney are CA authorized, or how long it takes to get authorized, or the potential difficulty of getting authorized based on marshal availability, or that one CA round in the tourney doesn't often highlight the CA of true skill (we do CA in melee, not tourney).  Nor do they necessarily understand how much time and effort many of the target archers put into there craft mostly on there own, practicing, making arrows, reviewing form, studying texts on the theory of archery, and how that one round of CA can be so frustrating because it feels like it undermines the work they put in at the one big chance they have to shine (most crowns don't sit and watch a
 local groups archery competition).
