[Ansteorra-archery] Children's Archery

I guess I am lucky I work with some other great marshals and
we take turns running the range, giving safety briefings and teaching new
people. With that said there are times my bow never gets unstrung (the last two
practices) but that is ok since  I like
working with the new shooters. As for parents and children at events. I require
the parent to bring them and give permission for the children to participate
and I am sorry if it upsets the parents that I send the child to bring them for
permission before I let them shoot. I make it clear to the parent if the child
does not follow my rules I am giving them a call to tell them the child is off
the range. So far that has worked perfectly. In order for the marshals not to
burn out I try to have several and make sure each one in training knows that
the range comes before their personal shooting. After years of being an Army
range safety officer I hate the thought of paperwork if someone is hurt so I
run a pretty strict range.

I've always looked at it like this. I can safely run a range and keep an eye on a large number of archers. I announce my rules (loudly) before I let anyone shoot. If someone new steps up (child or not) I go over my rules again. Ill even call an impromptu "hold" to see who was paying attention, and who I need to keep more of an eye on. Any marshal can get overwhelmed if there are a large number of children and no other marshals to help "herd the cats". We shouldn't be expected to "babysit" but if the parents want to leave their kids at a range, I can still keep them and my range safe. Just don't expect a marshal to play MOC once the range is closed.

As long as the parents stay with their children, I think encouraging parents to let their kids come to the archery range during an event is a great idea.  And it works really well too for getting the kids interested.  The only problem that can happen (I'm not saying it always does, or that it is always an inconvenience) is when a parent wants to do something else, the children want to stay at archery, and the archery marshal gets tagged as an unofficial babysitter.

>Another problem with working with the kids at practice is that at events, even if the parents aren’t interested in archery themselves, they can usually be talked into taking their kids to the archery range.  However, getting them to take them to practice, since it usually isn’t held in conjunction with other practices and activities (chivalric, rapier, scribes, etc.) it takes up another afternoon/evening.

I know our son Baldo was pretty good archery and was shooting but once he hit about 14 the SCA was no longer "Cool" so he did not want to do it anymore:-( I think this happens with many of the kids in the SCA. One thing that had been discussed before and they recently setit up for IKAC and I believe we can now make it an option on the RR is to have both children (10, 15, 20 yards with timed at 10 yard) and a youth division that is 15, 20, 30 with a timed round at 15 yards. This MIGHT help or it might now. If it is available for us to use we should consider using it and making it available.

Admittedly there are rather few participants and I agree we can do  more to recruit the children. On the other hand we have quite a few wee folk participate in archery at the events I frequent. I think local marshals are doing a pretty good job though and I would like to give them props for all they are doing to bring in new blood.
