It all depends on the event, the site and what the range can
accommodate, and quite honestly what the sponsoring branch wants to do.

Read the SCA-Archery yahoo group and there has been lots of talk lately
about how many people just don't care for 5-color ring targets and how
there should be alternatives. I would say that given a change most
people if they aren't worried about achieving score ranking had rather
do something other that a Royal Round at a FITA target. Lets face it
just about any mundane archery club, JOAN program, college archery
class, Bow Scout camp, or YMCA camp can let ya shoot at a FITA
targets. People are attracted to the SCA because they want something
different that they can't find elsewhere. So I don't blame folks when
they want something less mundane but the Royal Rounds DO allow a
consistent method for archers to track their progress.

I wish we could accommodate Royal Rounds at ALL of our events but we
cant. At the Gates Edge event this past weekend we had 24 people in
the tournament and the Seneca Run expanded this year to 7 stations with
all but the last station being 3D animal targets and the last one being
a IKCAC style shot. People who have attended the event know how long
the Seneca run can take, particularly if there are fairly novice
shooters. For those who have joined us on the shoot think about what
adding a single station to the run will do if a person has limited
arrows and aren't progressing at a one-shot equals one-kill pace. Even
a former Royal Huntsman might take 5 minutes or more so when ya
multiply that by 24 competitors and add the extra time needed for more
novice competitors it takes up a lot of time. However I can see us
ever doing away with the Seneca Run so people can have time to shoot
Royal Rounds . Likewise we aren't going to stop shooting clouts so
people can shoot Royal Rounds.

If we have time and can accommodate Royal Rounds at the event then we
will always do so but at our single annual event our archery
championship tournament comes first and any thought of Royal Rounds
comes second. I think that often people come to our event precisely
because we do more than just shoot at FITA targets or whatever kind of
targets on flat target butts. HL Leofwine of Sumersaeton was the
winner this past weekend and he said that in court he had been waiting
a long time to win this tournament. He had to beast 23 other
competitors including 3 other former Royal Huntsman to win it and
personally I think it would have been a waste of those gentlemens
talent of we had asked them to shoot at FITA targets.

This is perhaps true but if you get the number on the line
it can be done fairly quickly. We have done as high as 34 archers in 2
hours at Warlord as part of the Bowman's tourney. It generally takes
about 30 minutes to shoot a Royal Round for a line of archers and you
can usually get at least 2 and sometimes as high as 4 archers per
target round.

Some events lend themselves to be able to do just as you suggest and I
think personally that it's a great idea. However not all events can do
this. Having just helped run the Gate's Edge event this weekend, we
just had way too many people competing to make allowances for folks to
shoot RRs.
It's a great idea though.
more interested in having fun and using archery as a relaxing diversion
from my mundane life. As a result, I am not willing to drive 3 or 4
hours roundtrip, even carpooling, to attend a special practice just so
I can get an away score. It takes two very valuable resources: my money
and my time. I think this recent push to have special practices has
replaced holding Royal Round shoots at events.
>
> When I was in the Outlands, at any event at which archery was
held, there was also an opportunity to shoot a Royal Round (also,
sometimes events that had no other archery scheduled would still hold a
RR). Every effort was made to hold one. This made it much easier for
the casual archer to still participate and track his or her scores,
because if you're at the event anyway, why not shoot a RR and get that
away score? Heck, there was a time when my RR score was made up of only
away scores shot at events.
why since I started running archery at Mooneschadowe Guardian/Triumphe
