I would think a 1x4 would be less expensive but will not last as long. You can do what we did for our baronial stands and make them so they come apart if you are not going to use them often. We replaced the ones used at the YMCA because they were getting all shot up which is why I suggest 2X4s. It does not cost much and only took a couple hours to put six of them together.
