I have been looking at these for some time. I can buy rebuilt ones
for under $900 now. The SCA does not currently allow any group to
own one (they are still evaluating the possible liabilities).

In Texas (and most other places) you must get a prescription
for the device and the doctor who gives it to you becomes
your medical director. You must check it frequently and
have it checked by a certified tech periodically (annually
I believe). So there are ownership costs.

But the results are truly amazing. What they don't tell you
about in classes is only 1% of the people who get CPR leave
the hospital alive - and some of those are not in good shape.
The numbers jump to 30-45% (depending on the study) if you
can defibrillate in under 8 minutes. The average response time
for EMS is 10 minutes. We can either greatly increase the
number of EMS facilities (very expensive) or put devices usable
by the masses everywhere (less expensive).
