Charter
For the
Ansteorran Guild of European Dancers
A Kingdom-wide dance guild of Ansteorra

Purpose statement: The primary purpose of the Guild is to promote the
learning, teaching, and preformance of dances appropriate to the
scope of the SCA. These dances include Medieval, Renaissance, and
SCA (original and commonly performed) dances. The purpose of the
guild shall be achieved by:
  * facilitating communication between existing dance guilds;
  * assisting any local group in forming a dance guild;
  * maintaining a roster of dance teachers throughout the Kingdom;
  * producing and updating a Kingdom-wide dance manual including,
where
    appropriate, regional variations; * providing and updating a
discography;
  * producing dance tapes and/or compact discs;
  * encouraging research in Medieval, Renaissance and SCA dances; and
  * recognizing excellence in dance teaching.

Membership: Any person in the SCA who is interested in dance may
become a member of the Guild. There shall be four levels of
membership: Guild Member, Inceptor, Journeyman, and Magister of the
Guild.

1.Guild Member -- A Guild Member is a person who is interested in
dances from the SCA period and the current Middle Ages. The Guild
Member is expected to know, or to learn: basic dance etiquette, basic
dance steps for branles and pavans, and one or two dances known
generally throughout Ansteorra. One becomes a Guild Member by
sending his/her SCA and mundane name and address to the Guild
Proctor, expressing interest. The Guild Member will be informed of
the Guild's activities and projects.

2.Inceptor -- An Inceptor is a member of the Guild who meets the
following standards:
1.Has a knowledge of basic dance etiquette
2.Has taught and lead at least five dances to a group of people. The
Inceptor is required to know the names of the dances and the
terminology of the steps used in those dances and to implement this
knowledge while teaching. The Inceptor is required to be familiar
with some background information on each dance.
3.Wears an attempt at period attire while teaching dance.
4.Practices courtly and chivalrous behavior.
A Guild Member attains the level of Inceptor upon completion of the
following:
1.A letter with a list off dances taught is sent to the Guild
Proctor.
2.The letter should state where these various dances were taught -
local meeting, event, local dance guild, etc.
3.The letter must be witnessed by any one of the following persons:
local Seneschal, local Minister of Arts, local dance guild head, or a
Journeyman or Magister of the Guild.
The Inceptor's name is then added to the roster of dance teachers in
Ansteorra.

3.Journeyman -- A Journeyman is a member of the Guild who meets the
following standards:
1.Has a knowledge of basic dance etiquette.
2.Has taught and lead at least ten dances to a group of people. The
Journeyman is required to know the names of each dance and the
terminology of the steps in each dance, and background information on
each dance (i.e., type of dance, country of origin, approximate date
of each dance) and implement this knowledge while teaching. Half of
these dances must be recognized or documented as being done before
1601.
3.Wears an attempt at period attire while teaching dance.
4.Practices courtly and chivalrous behavior.
5.Has been in charge of dancing at three or more events. This

with musicians, if they are present, and doing walkthroughs and
calling when needed, and providing a list of dances that are to be
done, or helping the dancers to choose dances to be done.
6.Has performed at two or more Kingdom Calendar Events. A
performance is a dance or set of dances that are announced and
introduced as a "performance" before an assembled audience. It must be
documented as though it were being entered in an Arts & Sciences
competition or display, to verify the source of the dance(s) and the
performance leader's efforts in researching and teaching them. This
documentation doesn't have to be presented during the performance, but
it must be available. It must be difficult enough that at least three
practice sessions were needed to be able to perform the dance(s)
competently. The dance(s) must be performed competently.
An inceptor attains the level of Journeyman upon completion of

3.The letter must be witnessed by any one of the following persons:
local Seneschal, local Minister of Arts, local dance guild head.
