MiLady:
The request you've made will get you many answers, but you must choose what seems to be the best
for "your" needs and desires. I have fought rapier for 6 or 7 years now and my first two sets of
armor were of 4 layered trigger. It is very hot. It is also washable. My current armor is
leather. It was expensive. However it "feels" cooler than all that trigger. It is also nearly
waterproof and looks very dashing! I am currently thinking of the linen option. To "my" way of
thinking, under-armor's chief disadvantage is that you cannot easily open it up to cool off
between rounds. It is an all or nothing proposition. With the trigger doublet and the leather
coat I can at least unbutton it and get some air inside. The idea of a light color to reflect
rather than absorb heat from the sunlight is also important. With outer armor it will still be
necessary to wear a shirt under the doublet or coat. The best way we've found to protect the
armpits is to take some of the shirt fabric (4 layers of trigger or 3 of linen) and make a
rectangle about 5 inches by 12 to 14 inches long. The edges will need to be sewn (zig-zagged) and
then hand sew the patch inside the shirt at the underarm seam so that half of the patch hangs down
into the body and the other half hangs in the sleeve. The only stitching is in the center at the
seam and the ends hang freely. This way they do not bind or pull and are not restrictive in any
way. If you would like to talk to someone who knows how to sew armor, contact Momma Gwen at
ofcoursey at juno.com She is here in NorthKeep. If you want to try the linen, I can also put you in
touch with Mistress Faoileann (fah-lean`), she is Don Navarre's wife and made his armor.
Mistress Talana here in NorthKeep is also knowledgable in the arcane ways of sewing (it seems like
magic to me!) and I'm sure she would be willing to help. And if you choose to take the leather
option, I am willing to assist in any way I can.
