The phrase is a confusion of two earlier phrases -- throwing a gauntlet (a
medieval method of issuing a challenge) and running a gantlet/gauntlet
(originally gantlope), which was a a 17th century military punishment,
running between two lines of men with clubs, and which later came to mean
any arranged ordeal.
Consider it a exhibition or general challenge, both known in 16th century
England, and don't sweat the wording.
