Hmmm, so the multiple messages of people saying to keep epees and foils seems to have a common thread. That they are used for training.

Cool. What about dropping them as a tourney weapon, but keeping them for practice?

Just throwing ideas out.

Yes, I agree that is a potential solution, but the wording as proposed makes the epee illegal to anyone except a youth fighter and an authorized youth marshal. There are many adults that will fight a youth, but have no interest in being an authorized marshal for that type of activity.

Rixende when I was a youth fighter twe could only use foils and most fighters at that time only carried epees and heavy. So my solution was to carry extra foils. With this new rule won't that make more epees floating around that could be donated to a youth program to help it flourish.

If you eliminate the epee for all but the youth program, we may negatively the youth program. Under these proposed rules, the only people that can fight a youth with epee are the youth and the marshals. As a former youth marshal (waiting on my background check to clear again) I personally do NOT want to be the fighter when I am working with youth. I want to be watching them work with someone else. I can be a much more effective marshal and teacher when I am not the one fighting. My son gets much more out of not fighting his Mom.

Our current program allows any adult to practice with a youth as long as a youth marshal is present and decides the person is safe to fight the youth. This law change will remove from play the blade most children start with. And, while our youth program is tiny, it has a RIDICULOUSLY high success rate of "graduates." A good portion of that is because they have an opportunity to fight with adult fighters.

Daniel is 14 and has since graduated to my husband's ridiculously light Schlager when he fights heavy rapier, but he really can't fight anything much heavier. (And mind you, he does not have weak wrists. He's in his third year of gymnastics and is much stronger than his size implies)
