Yes they are.  Cutwork is a technique of backstitching a design, then
blanket or satin-stitching over it, and cutting out the middles of all the
loops etc.
Pulled thread is a technique of  embroidering some holding stitches on a
ground, then removing the fabric between them.  Leaves a very lacy look.

It never fails but that i go to events such as this, and end up frustrated
over all the classes i wanted to take, but lacked Hermione's spell to be in
two places at once.  (grin).  That's why i've taken to purchasing the cds of
these learning events!
