Mistress Stella and I attended a lecture given by this lovely lady when she
was in Ft. Worth, and she actually retracted her theory about the kumihimo.
Dr. Barber talked about having a post-lecture discussion once where a lady
(a fan of Dr. Barber) brought up a piece of finger-loop weaving that she had
done that replicated this belt. She showed us a sample of the finger-loop
braid and sure enough, it simulated the belt.

We were impressed that she changed her theory.

The Mummies of Urumchi by Elizabeth Wayland Barber, describes a woven wool
"suit" of a tunic and pants, woven of dark wool, dyed with red dye, to make
a lovely maroon color. It was sewn with woolen thread the same color and
trimmed with white wool thread dyed with the same dye, but because the
background color differs, the trim is bright red. (Plate 1 between pp 64 and
65 show him.) his "leggins" are felt, dyed red, blue and gold worn under
white deerskin boots. His belt is 5 color braided in whats modern know as
"kumihimo. (Plate 2a)

the colors are amazingly bright!
