that allows the weaver to accomodate weak threads is that the weaver directly 

controls the tension at any time by leaning forward (to decrease tension) and 

backward (to increase tension).  That is more of a factor in dealing 

with a weak spot in the warp than shed sticks.  The Egyptian looms wouldn't 

have been that flexible. </FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Interestingly enough, while backstraps are 

considered to be one of the most primitive types of looms 

(because basically they're just a bunch of sticks), various weaving 

authorities consider the the works produced by ancient Peruvian women on those 

types of looms to be the most intricate weaving ever produced.  World 

wide, bar none, loom technology not withstanding.</FONT></DIV>
