You know, I never thought of the Egyptians - I
guess they came up with something to deal with that problem! I know
they used wetting bowls when spinning linen, so they clearly understood the
utility of water when handling it. I've got to go dig out my Barber book
and see what it says. Of course, the ancient Egyptians used different kinds
of looms from the ones most of us use today. Theirs were vertical
looms and ground looms (and later on warp weighted looms) using shed sticks, not
horizontal looms with mechanical rising/falling shed mechanisms.
There could be some tensioning differences that come into play because of that,
but I'm speculating since I've never used a vertical loom or a ground
loom. I tried backstrap looms, and boy was that an adventure! Those
use shed sticks too, which allows backstrap weavers to have more control
over accommodating weak threads from shed to shed than would be possible on a
mechanical loom. I expect the Egyptians had the capability of
doing that to some extent with their looms as well, since the shedding
methods are basically the same.
