Filk is a little more than just taking a tune and putting your words to
it. Filk first came about in the Scifi world, but in the SCA it came to
mean a special kind of song. It is take a out of period song and put SCA
words to it. The Worst filk takes ready mundane songs and put really out
of period words to it. They make great car songs coming and going to
event. Acceptable filk is when someone takes and out of period tune and
put words to it that brings the spirit of the SCA alive., it makes us
believe in our kingdom. The "raising of the Star' is an example of that
kind of fill. They may be good around the camp fire but are not good for
contests. Trope is something else. St. Francis was famous for toping. He
would take popular songs and turn them into religious songs. We started
using the word trope in the CA to mean taking a period song and putting
in the spirit words to it. If done right these are good for bardic
contests. If you are doing good fill or trope you must be carful of your
words. Anything that makes the medieval dream come alive is good but
things that remind us that we are in a 20th century organizations is not
so good. They might be fun and cute but they are just as mundane as soda
cans.

I have a question. What about good filk or trope that was written not by
a SCAer but someone like Kipling or Tennyson? What do we think about
that?
