How do I go about getting ready? Warm up the voice. Go over the material
(briefly). Remind myself that if I'm not having fun, why am I doing this?

For verbal art? If you mean poetry, whatever the muse throws at me when I
pay her. For song, I only steal from the best. For stories, I have few of
those and I try to make them my own.

Why do I choose the things that I do? The trite answer is "Ask the muse".
The real answer is that I recognize my limitations and my strengths. I'm a
musician and a writer, an artist at heart, and so I always hope to improve
my art and my work. So I try to add to the list that I call my strengths
and take them from the list of limitations. If my strengths were just
singing, I would concentrate on learning more "songs". However, I can play
a passable recorder and flute (not at the same time ;)) and "have" to
learning between the instrumental music as well as the vocal music. It has
been suggested that I focus on one or the other to better my craft at
either, but since I enjoy both and I do this as much for my own amusement as
the entertainment of others, I maintain my "bi-polar" musical menu.
Currently my repetoir is about 100 - 150 musical pieces and a bare handful
of stories, no poems, and 1 piece of Shakespear. From my standards it's not
much, but it's a beginning.

In service to the dream with a song in my heart, I am

I have a question for everyone on the bards list...

When you begin to prepare for a bardic session, how do you go about
getting ready? Where do you go for you verbal art? Why do you choose
the things you do? Just curious...
