But what makes a custom? I came into the SCA some 6 years ago, and followed
what everyone else was doing, which was to show respect to the "seat" of
authority, i.e., the Crown, even if it is not occupied. I agree with Darius,
I happen to feel that it is a touching gesture that is part of my custom as
well as others, and was not even aware anyone did anything else.
If I do it, and 5 other people do it...is it a custom? If several Baronies do
it? If someone disagrees whether it is custom, does that change what it is?
Are we going to run into some problems here if we do not all agree on what
exactly is customary? Are we going to vote at that juncture, or what do we
think we ought to do? Sounds like our work is more than just rhymin' up a
storm!
