I'm partial to another format but then I made it up so I guess I would
be.

When I was the bard of the Canton of Rundel (several years back before
it got dissolved), I tied the group's name into the format. Each
competitor came to an early morning meeting (NOT that early) and drew
three Norse runes from a bag. Competitors needed to present three
pieces in any format (including instrumental) of their choosing. If the
competitor, could perform a piece which related to the meaning of each
of the runes they drew then they got extra consideration from the judge.
If they performed in different formats (stories, poems, dance, etc.),
then they got extra consideration.

I had to judge that one by myself and we had over two dozen competitors.
I guess I got what I asked for. It was fun though and people learned a
little more about Norse runes in the process.
