I went looking for the replies on this topic in the archives, and
found nothing. Looking in my mailbox, I see they went only to me. On
this list, Reply-To is not set, so most mailers' reply function will
send only to the person. When you hit Reply, check the addressees.

Daniel and Dreda discussed a pending subscription request from someone they
couldn't identify: "cuteolpuddytat at yahoo.com (Andre)".
His registered S.C.A. name is "Andri de Chartres", though he usually goes by
"André". I remember him, vaguely. He moved away from Bryn Gwlad some time
ago, but is still subscribed to our mailing list and always asks to be included
in the participants' registry when we do one. His Facebook page is at
<http://www.facebook.com/WritersaurusRex>, but his profile picture is his coat
of arms so there's no photo to refer to.
Daniel asked:
> But what do people want the subscription policy to be? Anyone who asks and
> doesn't spam? Heralds or herald-symps in Bryn Gwlad, like Johann or Laszlo?
My first impulse is to say that anyone who's interested in participating in or
learning from discussions on heraldry or names should be welcome. It might be
an opportunity to promote a higher level of general knowledge about heraldry in
the barony, and perhaps eventually get a few more people "trained up" to do
consultations. The two potential reasons that I see to restrict membership
more are (1) concerns about "hurt feelings" on the part of potential submitters
who don't like hearing the truth about silly names and poorly-designed armory,
which might make it hard for us to hold efficient discussions via the list and
(2) concerns about what Mari calls "the signal-to-noise ratio", which, should
it get too low, might make the list less than useful.
I guess the big question is: What do we want to get out of the Bryn Gwlad
Heralds list that we couldn't have just as easily gotten from the kingdom or
Society list, and would opening it up to all comers compromise our efforts to
get that?
