I greet the list with tidings of woe
The halls of Blackwater Keep are somber and quiet this eve and for the next few days. A former Baron of the Kingdom of Meridies, Laurel and teacher extraordinaire, an ear for any member of the shire, skilled metalworker, and mentor too many has left the mortal coil. Master Johann Dietbold der Drachenschwerd left this world on the 6th of May 2009. His passing was from complications from the last of a string of illnesses he recently suffered.
Master Johann was known to his friends and the public in the mundane world as ‘Papa John’, prior to the pizza chain that borrowed his name. He joined the SCA with his wife in the fall of 1984 in the Shire of Ezaret residing in the Kingdom Of Meridies. Master Johann’s Laurel was given for metalworking when he and his wife were members of the Shire of the Rising Stone also in Meridies. He also held Awards and Grants of Arms in the Society. Master Johann and members of his family moved to the Kingdom of the Outlands where he continued his art and joy in the fields of metalwork and gardening, among other endeavors.
A teacher of many and a simple man who you could talk to over a patch of herbs, a metalworking project, or just a glass of iced tea… He will be missed by many and live posthumously by the dear place he holds in their heart. I would ask that you keep the family in your prayers.
Master Johann’s daughter has asked those that know him to honor his wishes to forgo a funeral. He wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread at a private family memorial service. His obituary will be in the Sunday Clovis News Journal and a tribute to him is being prepared on the Risingstone yahoogroups.
For any who read this and wish to pass along wishes to the family but do not have the email address to do so, please send a private email to me at:

I will forward any emails to the family.
