To beat Mom to the punch:  embroidery needle (blunt), embroidery
thread/floss (does NOT have to be black), some piece of cloth to experiment
on (cross-stitch fabric is wonderful for beginning, since you can make
really even stitches), and a hoop if you like - they do make life easier.
And be prepared for the EASIEST type of embroidery/sewing that there is.
