[Bryn-gwlad] More on combat archery...

Good Morning,

  I'm sorry that my messages this morning and afternoon were short. I was on
my way out the door on both of them but wanted to get at least some snippet of
information out.

  I don't know who has been promising to get 'someone' out to Sunday practices
for so long. It was definitely not me and I don't remember HL Moreg talking
about this before she moved out of Kigndom. I know that right before I left
for Pennsic that Jason asked me if we could arrange something and I stated
that it would be difficult with my schedule but we could try. I'm glad to see
all the energy that some folks have and am sorry that you are frustrated.

  I'm sorry that new people feel they are getting the run around with regards
to this. The person to contact for Combat Archery (and all marshal forms) has
been on the marshal's webpage since the changes last year. As well, I recently
started publishing the Missile Marshal information in the back of every
Blackstar. Most marshals have known about this since the transition and should
have been able to direct people correctly.

  I have been to most of our PiP sessions this year including tonight. The
only person who talked to me about combat archery tonight was Charles. I
talked to Lisette about getting started with rapier fighting. I talked to
LuJin about brewing and his move to Austin. I talked to many people about
Pennsic. I was there until about 9pm when we headed home since our son has to
get up for Lego robotic league sessions in the morning.

  Combat Archery is an aspect of our fighting that many people at very high
levels in the SCA want to abolish. Combat Archery is the leveler of the field
and uber-Dukes can't be gods as easily. This is part of why there are so few
venues for it and why it is not something that an Authorizing Marshal should
give out lightly. Here is a little more detailed summary of what is expected:

* Familiarize yourself with the Society rules and the armor
requirements which were just updated at the August BoD Meeting

o
http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/combat/armored/marshal_handbook.pdf

* Familiarize yourself with the Kingdom rules and armor requirements

o        http://marshal.ansteorra.org/handbook

* Familiarize yourself with the Society combat archery information
which includes APD and siloflex information

o        http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/combat/archery/index.html

* Familiarize yourself with the missile section that Claire sent out
earlier. I added a couple items that were changes during my tenure.

* Gather armor together, which *might* be able to be borrowed from the
local knights marshal

* Gather bow/ammo together, which *might* be able to be borrowed from
the local archery marshal

* Get used to the above items so that you are safe to yourself and
others on the field during practices (official or not)

o Moving on the field, loading, loading on the run, safe during holds

* Talk to an Authorizing Marshal to find an appropriate venue to get
authorized. Process involves:

o Getting your armor checked by an appropriate marshal, getting your
bow/ammo checked by a CA marshal

o If authorized for fighting skip to next section otherwise:

* With appropriate marshal understanding of rules of engagement, rules
of the list, safety on the field

* Blow calibration from 'light', 'good' (low-end to solid) to
'excessive'

o Understanding of rules specific to combat archery including but not
limited to:

*         Safety lines

*         Invalid targets

*         Bow usage

*         Gleaning rules

*         Armor differences

* Ability to tell when the equipment being used is unsafe

o        Field test

* Safely draw and fire bow while in full armor

* Properly aim and fire at valid targets of different types

* Do the above while on the move and during presses

When we get to the authorization process, it is not an informational session.
It is testing the combatants understanding and ability to implement the
theory. This is not the time that you educate people about the rules. There
are experienced archers and fighters at the local level who can help people to
learn all of this and I know Charles is very willing to work with folks.

If you want people to talk to about this on-line, please join the
Ansteorra-missile mailing list. There are even recent discussions regarding
this in the archives because questions that came up for Gothic. One such post
can be found at:

st/000325.html

Btw, it is unlikely that more than one person would be able to borrow
equipment to compete at the fall event. Thinks makes it a challenge from the
number of people I've seen post today that probably don't have equipment they
can use.

Ciao,

Pug
