[Bryn-gwlad] Archery at BG Baronial

I think before we continue and do damage (or more damage) to the feelings of people within the Barony we need to look at ourselves first and see what went right and what went wrong. At the beginning of the summer I went to a business meeting to find out what was being planned for the event and found out the decisions had already been made. At the time I thought that was a good thing since the process was started and it would allow time for the entire event to be planned effectively. The first rumor I heard as to what was being planned had to do with court and archers on the stage with the crown, defending/hunting people dressed as animals approaching the stage. When I first heard this I was concerned about the safety of those surrounding the stage and not in armor. Thank goodness that rumor was false. Having been to a few events, I can not be considered a newcomer anymore to the SCA. I should have checked the SCA regulations on what is considered combat and would have found
that anytime any type of projectile is used against a live target the combat rules are in effect (if the target fights back or not). Had I seen this earlier, I would have made a proposal to modify our plan to accommodate many of the people that have shown an interest in archery over the last several months. I would never advocate breaking or modifying any of the rules since you will not find anyone as safety conscious as I am. Having run ranges (for the Army) from basic pistol ranges, machine gun ranges, to live fire and maneuver ranges I know the importance of safety and following the rules. While I speak for nobody but myself, I feel fairly well assured that there is nobody asking for rules to be broken to accommodate the archers within the Barony. I can not agree, as it has been suggested that anyone in target archery was looking for anyone to take us by the hand and cater to us to get combat qualified (this is one of the few things I take offense to). To those of us
not familiar with the rules of engagement the term HUNT did not lead me to think of combat requirements.

As of now, I have neither seen or heard of any plan (either in detail or outline form) as to what this competition will entail. The event Steward can not run every event, I was wondering who is responsible for the planning and implementation of the archery competition? It is possibly not to late to turn this into an enjoyable activity for both those participating and those watching. We need to start now if we are to succeed by October. Is there a way to turn this from shooting at people to shooting at moving non human targets where the rules of combat would not be applicable? Possibly a pop up target or moving target would work in this.

It was pointed out that while this is a Baronial event we are also the host and need to be concerned with the enjoyment that others from outside the Barony will have. Those who said that are absolutely right and I could not agree more. We also need to balance that with the interests of those within the Barony. I admit I am strange and enjoyed the little help I was able to provide at my first couple of events. Not everyone is so strange and saying to someone come to your first or second event with us and help others have a good time is a little much to expect. People may want to come back and become more involved if they are engaged not just spectators. With that said there is little reason to expect anyone planning to have know that there was a lot of recent activity in target archery. If I had know when the planning was taken place I would have participated (my fault) not sure if anyone from Archery at the Baronial level was invited.

The Populace as a whole voted that we would not have everything at every event. The narrowing of focus was something that all those who were at the meeting agreed would be a good thing. When I made the initial bid for Baronial, I was very clear that we would be doing a very focused event with one or two main activities only. And the vote was overwhelming in favor of this. I am a Don of Ansteorra, and I very purposefully did NOT include rapier in my bid to free up time for other activities at this specific event. The bid was voted on and discussed in detail 6 months ago, since then, no one has raised any objections, in fact, until the last few days, almost every reaction I have gotten has been very positive in looking forward to the event, both from within and without the Barony.

>From everything I have read, there is still a good amount of time and several people willing to help with the CA authorizations. Will it be easy? Obviously not, but for those that wish to do so, it can happen. If one cannot be authorized in time, there are still many things that can be done to have fun and help host our event.

Everyone is welcome at the event, in fact I think that having more that are not participating in the main activities can be quite wonderful. As was proven at the Lysts event, the Crowd can make the event wonderful. The pagentry, the show, the display works better when more people are watching. If some folks choose not to be at the event because we are not doing their particular activity that day, I am sorry. There are on average 2 events EVERY single weekend in this Kingdom, you can find what you want somewhere. The Populace as a whole at the Business Meeting where the event was discussed and then the next one where it was voted on agreed that not having a cookie cutter event and concentrating on a few things was a GOOD THING.

Again, the original idea of the event was to be able to focus on one or two activities only. The two activities that were chosen were Chivalic Combat and Combat Archery. By doing this at this event, then we can concentrate on other things at the next event. I would encourage those that want to focus on something to please, step forward. I know that we will be discussing bids for future events soon. And I would be happy to help with those events when the time comes, even if there is not an activity that I normally concentrate on. I am a member of this Barony, and I am here to help it work. Whether it is for a Queens Champions tourney or for a Kingdom Music and Dance or for an Archery Tourney. We are all members of Bryn Gwlad, perhaps we should all work to help.
