[Bryn-gwlad] Targets

Ooo! And we could have falcons/hawks who are rapier fighters with two
daggers and they have to sit on the hunters fist, hooded (already easily
done) until it's time to fly to the prey when unhooded...
;-)
I have fond memories of similar (well, to Lyonel's post below..not mine
;-) hunts held many years ago in Bjornsborg....lots of fun and very
tiring!
One of the things I've seen added before were rabbits who distracted the
dogs. I'll leave it to your imagination what they looked like.
Of course, they are nice prey for falconers!

Salut cozyns,
We used to run boar hunts at events in Artemisia. Our hunts never
involved
combat archery, but I don't see why they couldn't. Here are the rules I
recall:
Boar hunts are only effective in heavily wooded areas.
The boars were armored combatants, usually armed with two swords. A
boar
can continue to run and fight on one injured leg. Both legs must be
injured
to ground a boar. Boars do not acknowledge shots to the arms (boars have
no
arms).
Dogs were armed single sword and
1) were not allowed to use thrusting tips
2) could only attack a boar in teams of four or more
3) had to break off the attack and return to their hunters any time
their
numbers dropped to three or less in the fight (i.e.--if five dogs attack
a
boar, the boar need kill only two dogs to rout the rest)
4) no routed dog could return to attack until after locating (tagging)
his
or her hunter
5) a dog routed from an attack in which his or her hunter was taking
part
was out of the hunt
Hunters were armed with spears (but could just as easily be armored
archers). Hunters were allowed to carry polearms instead of spears, but
the
polearms were used as thrust only weapons.
We never tried stag hunts, bear hunts, or bison hunts, but it should be
easy
enough to come up with comparable rules.
