I was looking for more piano Christmas music on Amazon one day and ran
across a group called "Anonymous 4" who sing medieval choral music. I bought
their Noel set from Barnes & Nobles for $20 (it's $20 on their website as
well, $50.49 on Amazon, so go BN if you want to buy it). The booklet that
comes with the CDs tells where the words came from, where the tunes came,
the lyrics, and the translation. You can hear a piece of all the songs at
Amazon<http://www.amazon.com/Noel-Carols-Chants-Xmas-Box/dp/B000A5HJUO/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_17/102-4833345-8379319?ie=UTF8>
.
Disc 1: Legends of St. Nicholas: Medieval European Chant and Polyphony
Disc 2: Wolcum Yule: Celtic and British Songs and Carols
Disc 3: On Yoolis Night: Medieval Carols and Motets
Disc 4: A Star in the East: Medieval Hungarian Christmas Musis
As I said, I've purchased this CD set and while I haven't gotten all the way
through it, it's absolutely gorgeous. Reminds me of traditional Church
music. It's mostly choral, but does use an Irish harp, Baroque harp, and
psaltery (don't know what it is, but it's listed with the instruments) on
some songs.
I won't be out in the park this week, but I'll bring it with me next week if
anyone wants to look through the book.
