I suspect number two is closer. I finally figured out what they are talking about, and in criticm of Anonymous 4's plainchant, reviewers pretty well described what they are talking about.
Anonymous 4's medieval Christmas music has some substance to it, but their plainchant has that melancholy ethereal quality to it.

In the sense that they're choral and pretty and use non-mainstream instruments, so they must be "new age" for not using guitars and a trap set? Or that they're nice and peaceful and calming and people could probably meditate to it?
