[Bryn-gwlad] Being Ignored

I do think that having one person greet individuals would be a great start; if that person could then find out what the newcomer is interested in and maybe start introducing them around to current members with similar interests, that would also be great. That really was my complaint/concern; I've been reading these posts about the suggested demo at the Pirates premier and how the demo could help/possibly not help the Barony with getting new members, and I got to thinking that getting people interested is great, but there needs to be something more when you do get the interested newbie.

Sure, good point. If our Rapier Marshal cannot be at PiP he makes sure he has a deputy to bring out the loaner gear and take care of business. If the hospitaler cannot be there he should also have a deputy there to greet people and introduce them to the SCA. That could and should be done if it is not already.
However, I got the idea there was more to your complaint that just that. After all, you are not a new face. What's more, you said that there were "a few outstanding exceptions" who came up to speak to you, but clearly that was not what you were looking for.
So, let me ask this a little differently: What would it take to keep newcomers -- and others -- from feeling ignored and to make them feel welcome. Would having one guy out there to say hello and make a few introductions really take care of that or is this a bigger problem that involves us all?

A valid question; in all seriousness, if the SCA/group is interested in
gaining/retaining new members, there needs to be someone at public
activities (especially for things like PiP) who is on the lookout for new
faces. This person needs to be able to go up to those people, maybe give a
short intro to the SCA and make the newcomer feel welcome. I think this is
the thing that is really needed. As I said, with just a few exceptions, I
felt totally ignored the times I've gone out to PiP; for someone totally new
to the SCA, this would be very off-putting, I understand that people already
involved in the SCA will have their group of friends that they want to hang
out with, a newcomer probably wouldn't and may not ever come back if the
first reception is poor. All the demos in the world will not help, if
interested individuals are not given a welcome.

I'll admit, I probably did not notice you. I may not even have seen you.
I am typically talking to the fencers with whom I will spend the evening
training or I am doing some kind of business so most of the new people
I see are those brought to me for something fencing related.
From the tone of this note I assume you feel we have failed to take
some important actions. So, I'll ask -- in all seriousness -- what would
you have us do instead of what we are doing now?
