Even just asking "Would any of you like to introduce yourselves?" gives the opportunity, and if someone doesn't want to talk they don't have to, but they've been offered the chance.
 
In my experience, the momentary embarassment of being the center of attention is far outweighed by the lasting comfort of knowing people and being known.
