[Bryn-gwlad] Newcomers... The Quest Begins

OKay, so we want ideas. I have a few, I don't know how popular they might
be-but here goes. First of all, announcing at PIP that newcomers say 'Hi'
is noble and we should do it, but I think we'll have a much larger
participation if we make it more on "their terms". Most people are too shy
to announce themselves, and frankly when we're all in that large circle, it
looks exclusive. We should set up a 'newcomers point' where we can make a
simple banner with a pole and say something like " Greetings
Newcomers-please sign in here" (heck I'll make the durn thing) and have the
hospitler, deputy, or other friendly person there at all times to greet and
explain what we are. If they sign in, we can snag their email address and
they can be sent information (with permission of course) regarding
newcomers' meetings and other fun things that will be useful to them.
Secondly, some of our demos need to be at places where adults have interests
that already can be transferred to the SCA. Local craft businesses such as
pottery, stained glass, herbs, leather, etc where we could contact the
business owner and say how we're a non-profit organization and we would like
to do a demonstration at their business that could attract more business for
them. I know that Feats of Clay teaches hand thrown pottery classes, we
could encourage people to take classes and show their wares at events.
There is Silk Road, which sells fine fabrics, there's Blue Moon stained
glass also teaches classes with the same sort of ideas. I don't know how
much room these places could give us, possibly a parking lot, and we could
have the demostration at a time of day when we CAN show up, like after work.
The business will see it as free promotion for them and will like us. If
we do that though, we should show art/work that relates to that particular
business along with a smattering of other things we do. The worst thing the
business could say is no...I'm not sure of the "legality" of this, but heck
it's my idea. Be creative, I think this would be a more effective
promotional tool.
