Well, I've kept quiet as long as I can stand it.
I think this conversation has been useful because it has made us THINK about recruitment and retention, however,
this barony is not a "club"...it is a living, breathing entity that gives to it's hosts only as much as they give to it. New people rock. They give us energy and renew our enthusiasm. But honestly, the people in the Barony do that for me every time we are together.
They are my family, even when we don't all get along all the time.
The one person that can do the most good for the group is you.
You control no one's actions or attitudes but your own.
People can be friendly, give you information and offer you help, but ultimately, you decide how you are going to react and what kind of contribution YOU are going to make.
If you'd like to discuss this more, please email me at gwynethb63 at yahoo.com as I believe personal critism should be kept private.

Okay, I'm really going to stick my foot in it here; yes, I do think the
burden is on the Barony, the newcomer has already taken some initiative by
showing up. Part of the Hospitaler's job should be to find out what the
newcomer is interested in and guide them in the right direction, rather than
spending "30 minutes discussing heavy fighting to a newcomer who has no
