Greetings Stephanie,
I won't be able to be at the demo itself, but do you need any help with the banner?

Good Gentles,
I have volunteered to make a "welcome" banner for newcomers. I wanted to
double check that there isn't already such a banner around before I created
one. If everyone is ok with this, I will make my best attempt to have it
available for the fantabulous demo we're having on Thursday at the Alamo
Draft House at 9PM. There has been so much energy put forth lately, let's
make certain that energy is as productive as possible. We will need all of
it for all of those newcomers we're about to snag!
Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum,
Stephanie

I think I am going to take a moment to give significant praise to Isabelica for the astounding amount of work she has done in such a short time. She has buckled down and actually started whittling away at our recruitment and retention problems with real research and actual plans being put in motion instead of just talking about the problem. She has sat down over the last several weeks with many people, myself included, with her spiral notebook, taking any and all brainstorms on how to repair these problems, and then she's actually worked with all of these ideas to discover which can work and which cannot. She's handled our chattering here on the list over the last several days with aplomb and flawless tact, and every time she posts it makes me feel that something is actually getting done to resolve these issues.
Nothing is perfect, we won't ever all agree on everything, and like any organization like this one, progress only comes in fits and starts, with setbacks and trapdoors lining the path. The number one most important thing to facilitate the process is for us all to actually start talking about it... which we now have achieved. Some might hesitate at the gravity of some of the things we have to discuss, but have no doubt... we have to discuss them.
But none of that talk would make any difference if there were no one listening, sifting through the chaff for the useful bits of information, and most importantly, putting them into action. Isabelica and I sat at Wendy's probably three weeks ago and specifically talked about the importance of trying to engage the Drafthouse in our efforts. Although I've expressed hesitations about how we interact with them, I am thrilled that we are interacting with them, and it shows me that she is listening as well as acting upon the thoughts and concerns and hopes and ideas that we all are expressing.
In truth we owe it largely to her that we are even in a position right now to be discussing these things. For being willing to wrestle one of the barony's biggest pink alligators, I say that Isabelica really deserves our gratitude, praise, appreciation, and support.
Huzzah to you, Izzy.

Greetings unto all,
I've been doing some research into what other baronies/groups are doing and would like your input on them.
Some of the issues we've addressed:
Problem: Spotting Newcomer's at PiP
Solution: True we don't catch them all, but we catch quite a few. If someone is willing to make a banner of sorts, I'll start bringing out the table again. I'll find one I can leave in my car, since I come straight from work on Tuesdays. I'll have brochures.
At PiP allow newcomers to make introductions if they like. Have great use of heraldry office and their wonderful voice heralds to make announcements for us (directing newcomers who may not have seen the table to the table, asking them to introduce themselves yadda yadda yadda) since they are more apt to be heard.
Problem: Overwhelming/underwhelming a newcomer
Solution: I would like to bring up the idea of fostering. Several baronies allow a newcomer to be "adopted" by another member who shares the same interest and after a set time period allows that member to help the newcomer feel more comfortable with garb, events, and the SCA.
This solution would require assistance and dedication from the barony which I know we can give.
Problem: Losing a newcomer after one, two, three meetings/events
Solution: Life happens. But we can perhaps get a signup sheet started, and periodically check in on them to see if they have any questions. Perhaps via email? Since most people don't like giving out their phone numbers?
Problem: Attracting new members
Solution: I have been looking into parades, charity walks, museums, playhouses, movies, and everything else I can think about getting our fingers into. Fecino & Katerine (Mary if I spelled your name wrong I'm so sorry =( ) have brought up an idea of perhaps donating time during Christmas to wrap presents, but do it in our garb. Bookpeople does this so perhaps thats a thought.
All in all I try to catch newcomers at the PiP. Poor Baron Thomas, I'm constantly introducing him to newcomer this and newcomer that, throwing names at him left and right. I attempt to direct them to those who can help them pursue their interests. But I know we can improve on this. So what do you think?
