Oh my. I'm not the only one with tact issues here :-)
Anyways, smoke and flames aside, I think we should not get diverted
by the actual issue that Lazlo raised, into debates of whether old
people have value. That's just stupid.
He does raise a good point, a majority of people in Bryn Gwlad (I'm
not going to say SCA since there's many SCA college groups out there,
it's how I started in Myrkfaelinn) are over their thirties, and are
married, or divorced, with children.
I'll be an example of how age affects membership:
I made a conscious decision sometime last fall to reduce my SCA
activities partly because I decided that after years of not hanging
out with people my age, i do want to hang out with my peer group.
Also, in the SCA, I found myself dating older men, one of them was
about 14 years older then me, and I know I'm not the only young
female in the SCA who had such discrepency in age in relationships.
I'm not saying it's necessarily bad. But I'm not going to say it was
necessarily the best either.
And whether it's shallow or not, generally, when you're in your
twenties and not married, dating is pretty important :-) And give me
a break, I know many of you play because your partner is a SCAdian.
And if your partner is not SCAdian, you'd likely play less. If I'm
currently dating a peer, I'd probably be more active in the SCA right
now. But I'm dating a non-SCAdian, who thinks I'm intensely dorky for
being in the SCA. So I only emerge when he's busy, or when I get SCA cravings.
So yes, let's celebrate our 40's, 50's and 70's crowd. But please,
please, get more people in their 20's in Bryn Gwlad who don't have
parents in the SCA.
Make the dating pool more attractive in the SCA for people of all ages!
