Namaste!

I havent really poked my nose onto the list, mainly because I wasent really
sure what I could add, but the membership/newcomer posts, especially
Mirabelle's, have piqued my interest a little bit. Im a newcomer to the Barony, but
not a newcomer to the SCA.

I hate to use the 'Well where Im from, we did it diffrent' bit because it
tends to ruffle feathers, which isnt my intent. Before I even start my lil
note here, I will say ahead of time that I certainly do not mean any offense to
the folks of this Barony or Kingdom. So far, what little of BG Ive
experienced has been positive. However, as I read about the 'Newcomers Household' I
am reminded of a similar concept held in my former Barony that yielded very
positive results with newcomers.

The 'Baronial Household' was an official household, and the heads of it
were, as you can imagine, the Baron and Baroness. It met once a month at the
park clubhouse on the same night as Fighter Practice, so that even new fighters
could walk in, hear a lecture or eyeball a class, and head right back out
onto the field if they wished to. These classes/labs were taught by any SCA
member/s, giving them a chance to try teaching. When a person had attended
six of these classes/labs, they were called up during Court at an event, and
given a medallion (often times a person's very first 'award') signifying they
were graduates of the Baronial Household. These folks were now introduced to
the populace as a whole, and considered 'full fledged SCA players.

I have only had the chance to attend one PiP since my work schedule doesn't
allow Tuesday nights free (I work for the Police Dept) but I didn't feel
strange or unwelcome at all. I just walked up to watch the fighters (they are
easy to spot!), and was approached by a few people who were intrigued by a new
face. I met some key members of the Barony, and had a great time. I wish I
could be more active/visible within the Barony, but most of the Guilds meet
during work hours for me. In any event, I think everyone is doing a good job
right now just as things are.....I didn't feel unwelcome at all.

Hoping to see everyone again soon,

Lady Sunayna Vindasani
(brand new documentable SCA name.....thanks Laszlo!!)
