[Bryn-gwlad] Appology for my absence

So here's the story. Don't read it if you're
squeamish.
We have two little dogs, Arthur, who's a
terrier-mini-poodle, and Moe, who's a very big
miniature poodle (about 22lbs). Arthur is about 12
pounds, and only has one eye due to a previous medical
condition, so while he looks like a slightly used chew
toy he's a tough and fearless little guy. Our dogs
were in their harnesses, on leashes, taking a walk
around the block yesterday with my wife and our
daughter who was riding in her stroller (I was at
work). The walk was going great, and they were
turning back into our cul-de-sac when two labs came
running up. They looked pretty friendly like labs
gererally are until one of them picked Arthur up in
his jaws and started shaking him like a rat. My wife
started screaming for help, and tried pulling Arthur
from the lab. The lab, assisted by his pack mate,
managed to pull back hard enough to pull Arthur right
out of his harness, and a little feeding frenzy
ensued. Screaming and punching the dogs with the
plastic retractable leash housing didn't impede the
labs who kept biting and throwing Arthur until a
neighbor ran over to help.
Arthur was rushed to the vet with a cigarette pack
sized chunk torn out of his back (remember, he's the
size of a cat) deep punctures to his belly, and a
number of smaller bites and scratches. They thought
the wounds were mostly skin and muscle until they
examined him in more detail while getting ready to sew
him up. His abdomen had been cut open and his small
intestine had been torn. The tissue around his colon
was already looking necrotic. They removed part of
his small intestine, stitched it back together, and
cleaned up some blood clots which were hampering the
blood supply around his colon. They opened him from
his sternum to his peritineum to search for other
damage, and his other organs looked OK.
They're concerned about sepsis. If a cut was missed
in the intestine, or if the blood supply isn't
sufficient around his colon his digestive tract could
poison him. He's got at least three drains in, and
he's on strong antibiotics, pain killers, and a
chemical to help balance the protien in his blood.
We visited with him at lunch, and he looks like a
railway map. Despite the drugs he's in pain, and
there are still real concerns about him pulling
through. We should know in the next couple days.
The labs don't have any bad history that I know of,
and they have a fenced in yard that they'd broken out
of. The dogs' owner is being decent about the whole
mess, and thankfully has said he'll pay for the vet
bills. We'll see if he changes his tune when he sees
just how big those bills are.
