I agree that this is a great oportunity for the group
as well as a possible recruitment possibility
eventhough it does tread some lines.

While the timeline of the movie and the heyday of the
pirate was not until at least 100 years after the SCA,
pirateering did exist within the time frame of the
SCA. Just not in the dress that most people think of
pirates in. But as long as there have been shipping
merchants there have been pirates, just as there have
always been thieves to intturrupt caravans :)

So, if someone comes into the SCA and wants to be a
pirate persona, I say we encourage that, but explain
that they would be an earlier era pirate so thier garb
may be different than what they have in thier head and
the seas they ravaged would be different, but they can
still pirate. Then we help them in developing a
persona, guiding them to the right era clothing,
teaching them to light fight if they so choose etc.

Honestly I don't see this as being any different than
the Lord of the Rings fans that come to the SCA
wanting to be an Elven ranger :)

Of course I say all this and am unlikely to be able to
come to the demo :0 but I just wanted to remind
everyone that the career of the piratee didn't just
start in the 1700's

Hoping to be able to participate again soon,
Vyvyanne Fox
Daughter of the shipping merchant Wilim Fox who has
delt with his share of pirates in 1360
