Folks, I say this as a registered authenticity freak: do the stinkin'
demo because it will probably be fun (which should be THE reason that
you play in the SCA) and because you may draw other fun, creative people
to the SCA.

There, I said it. :P

Pleaseread, I need input.

Folks,

Do you really believe that most people are going to
see this movie just because it is a Pirate movie? Or
is it more likely people are going to see this movie
because it is an adventure film, with swords, and
drinking, and humor and neat costumes? (Hmmm
adventure, swords, drinking, humor, neat costumes...)

Why did the SCA have a presence at TRF? Because it
was a location where people who liked history and
sword fighting and music and dancing showed up. There
were pirates there and fairies and Starfleet uniforms
as well, but that didn't stop us.

If we shouldn't do this demo as the SCA, then we can
dismiss doing Excalibur FANTASY Faire. And the Austin
Celtic Festival is mostly post period, so we shouldn't
do that either, or any Sci-Fi Cons...or Gaming Cons.
Why did we walk in the Keep Austin Weird 5K or the
Breast Cancer Awareness 5K? What does that have to do
with 600 to 1600 reenactment? If I'm remembering
correctly, the Houston Area groups did a fabulous set
of demos for the Lord of the Rings traveling exhibit
that was at the fine arts museum...I guess they were
really off base.

How many of us are gamers, sci-fi geeks, closet
pirates or elves or dwarfs? Yes, D&D, EQ, and WoW
counts. Who has read Lord of the Rings, Treasure
Island, or Narnia? We are looking for a personality
type. I do not think you are giving our target
audience enough credit.

These people do not know we exist, they might embrace
us or laugh at us or say, I really want to be an 18th
Century Pirate and we can say try the Pirate group
down in Galveston. This is a Window of Opportunity to
introduce ourselves to people. If we limit ourselves
only to Perfectly Period Demo opportunities, then we
are tying our own hands rather severely.

BTW, the first time I ever saw the SCA was at a movie
demo for Disney's The Three Musketeers, definitely not
period either.
