Hi,
I am the Bryn Gwlad Archery Marshal. I shoot longbow myself.
I would advise your professor to take the bow to Archery Country, on
the 183 access road in Austin, between Burnette and Lamar. They have
people on staff there that can make a "Flemish twist" bowstring, either
with loops at both ends, or to be tied with a timber hitch at the lower
end, as was sometimes done in period. They can custom-make a string
appropriate to the bow, and will do it for a reasonable price.
I have the tools and skill to make strings out of any material that you
can obtain, including linen thread. But I still go to Archery Country
and buy strings there. Why? Because the string is a critical part of
the bow, and a badly made string is a serious safety hazard. And
because they can make it for less than I would have to charge for the
hours of effort it would take me to do it.
Regards,
HLS Jason of Rosaria
