Salut cozyns,

Well, in my experience, riveted mail does come apart in combat. It lasts 
much longer than butted links, and losing one link doesn't create a cascade 
effect in the surrounding links, but it does develop holes with repeated 
blows. This appears to be especially true anywhere the links can get 
anvilled in a blow (solid armor under the links and really solid blow). I 
think the only way to stop that is with welded mail.

I would expect the same to be true for aluminum. I'm with you on the 
preference for flat rings, but I don't know what difference it will make in 
a hauberk.
