Pieced fabric is period and quilting is period but I really haven't be able 
to document what we call patchwork quilting.  I think that's a much later 
element in handcrafts.

that being said.... I'm saying that off the top of my head because I was 
interested and tried to find the earliest source.  So far it seems I can go 
back to the 18th century for patchwork.


Logically, simple colored squares sewn together could be considered 
patchwork but I don't think that's what you mean.
