Welcome! We're glad to have you. We tend toward boisterous more than
gentle, but be not afraid.

We've got an active clothiers' guild, and some very talented artisans
who share that interest. You should have no trouble finding "fellow
travelers".

We're very laid-back around here; virtually nothing is a requirement.
Most members of Bryn Gwlad's populace have SCA names, and the majority
have chosen cultures and eras. A significant number have developed
their personae further than that, but it's far from universal and not
something anyone will judge you on.
Our official baronial motto is "strength through diversity". Even if
Italian personae were rare, we would welcome and enjoy getting to know
"Giuliana". And we'll welcome and enjoy getting to know whatever
persona (or personae) you choose to develop, unusual or not.
As it is, among those who listed persona information for themselves in
the most recent domesday for the group, Italy tied with Scotland as the
second most popular country of residence. (England was first, and
those three countries together made up roughly 60% of the listings.) I
suspect some of the popularity comes from the fact that much of Italy
experiences the same kind of heat we know here in Ansteorra, so
authentic clothing native to at least those parts of Italy tends to be
more comfortable than, say, authentic Icelandic clothing.
If you do decide to go Italian (as Giuliana or someone else), I
recommend you speak to Signora Elisabetta Morosini. She's a
15th-century Florentine, and shares your interest in authentic,
serviceable clothing. She's also a very gracious lady, and good at
making newcomers feel welcome; a perfect choice if "knowing somebody"
would make you more comfortable at meetings. I won't give her e-mail
address on the list--darn spiders!--but since she's our treasurer, you
can contact her via the baronial website
<http://bryn-gwlad.ansteorra.org/officers.php>.
Our business meeting is at 7:00 p.m. Monday, at the Yarborough branch
of the Austin Public Library
<http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?
address=2200+Hancock+Drive&zipcode=78756>, which is just a few yards
from a stop for the #3 bus
<http://www.capmetro.org/riding/routes_001.asp>. (The stop is on
Burnet, and falls between "Burnet/Koenig" and "Lamar/38th" on the
schedule.) It's a good opportunity to find out more about how the
Barony runs and meet some of us. Come join in! (We usually wear
modern clothes to the meeting.)
