Some individuals are better able than others to withstand the stress of ingesting toxic substances. Like Niklas, I have a dog (a very talented and sneaky counter-cruiser) that has committed enough dietary indescretions to kill several dogs twice her size - in most cases without any evidence of discomfort. However I still do my best to avoid putting forbidden items where she can reach them, because she might not be so lucky the next time.
For those who are interested, here is a link to the American Veterinary Medical Association's page on household hazards. And just in case anyone wonders about the "fatty foods" listing, it's because for animals prone to pancreatitis, something as simple as a few potato chips or a hot dog could result in a medical emergency or even death. With halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas coming up, all pet owners need to be vigilant about protecting their pets.
Oh, and it surprises me that the AVMA omitted bones from their list. Just remember - cooked bones splinter much easier than raw bones. For those of you who feed a raw meaty bones diet (that would be "period" dog food!), rabbit bones are very brittle and splinter even when raw. If you feed rabbit, feed the skin and fur with it to protect the stomach and intestines.
