That route only works if a) you have lots of money to spend on the 
extra gas, b) lots of time to get there, and c) *really* enjoy 
looking at the scenery.

Take 183 northwest out of Austin. (Watch out for the left turn 183 
makes on the north edge of Lampasas, otherwise you'll end up on 281 
heading towards Fort Worth.)

183 joins highway 84 in Goldthwaite, stay on 84 through Brownwood 
(where 183 heads off to the north) until you get to Abeline. Take the 
loop around the southwest side of Abeline until you get to I-20. Take 
20 west to exit 249 and follow the directions on the website 
(http://black-lake.ansteorra.org/gothic/directions.htm) or August Black Star.
