I will most likely use parachute cord for right now, looking into some hemp cord and will look thru sir Gaston's books for some examples of the wire attatchements.

Every camail I've seen in a museum was attached with a length of twisted 
steel wire capped at each end with what look like crimped-on metal beads. 
The Black Prince's effigy looks like a reproduction of the same sort of 
twisted wire.

In the SCA, I've not seen anyone duplicate this, but I've seen posts on the 
Armour Archive claiming to have done so. I used leather shoelace. Others 
I've seen have typically been leather laces or twisted sinew. Here's one

That post is three years old. You might try posting a question there to see 
if anyone has come up with anything new.
