Thank you for your response, got my helm done lastnight. Just need to touchup a few spots and will look into the cable.

how about a modern version of the original ... as in an old bicycle or motorcycle control cable (larger diameter), with a crimped on ferrule (ask around for the bicycle or motorcycle riders to find someone who has the cable cutters, crimpers & ferrules in their tool kits - else the cycle shops can set them for you, likely for little or nothing). alternative, for larger cables you can likely get ferrules at the big-box hardware stores and set them with a big honking pair o' pliers (or hammer & a punch .. though i would backup with a bit o' epoxy

solution cheap (likely free ... i have some old bicycle and/or motorcycle cables (unless i tossed the later, not sure, would have to check) you can have if you want them -

flexible, strong (far more so than para-cord), and a close match to a period approach as outlined in the original post

I will most likely use parachute cord for right now, looking into some hemp cord and will look thru sir Gaston's books for some examples of the wire attatchements.

  Salut cozyns,

I thought by now you'd have a dozen responses, cozyn Barnet. Since no one
else has spoken up yet:

Every camail I've seen in a museum was attached with a length of twisted
steel wire capped at each end with what look like crimped-on metal beads.
The Black Prince's effigy looks like a reproduction of the same sort of
twisted wire.

In the SCA, I've not seen anyone duplicate this, but I've seen posts on the
Armour Archive claiming to have done so. I used leather shoelace. Others
I've seen have typically been leather laces or twisted sinew. Here's one
post from the archive:
http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6982&highlight=vervelle+cable

That post is three years old. You might try posting a question there to see
if anyone has come up with anything new.

lo vostre per vos servir
