Ladies and Gentlemen:
I find myself forced to address this issue because of some recent liberties taken by members of the Populace.
Officers are officers for a reason. They have been selected by the Kingdom to be the representation of the local SCA chapter. Their warrant is renewable every six months up to two years. Whenever an office is open, anyone who is a paid member in good standing is welcome to apply. The Regional officer will consult with the local Seneschal, the current holder of the office and in our case the Baron, as to who the next officer should be.
These officers often take classes, attend workshops, and have guidebooks, rulebooks, Kingdom Law, policies and procedures to instruct them in the proper execution of their office. They are answerable to the Regional office, the Kingdom office and the Crown, as well as their fellow officers in the Barony. That responsibility gives those officers the right to guide and make decisions for the Barony.
If you have a great idea, either take it to the appropriate officer or wait until their term is over and apply for that office. If you find a great deal on something the Barony needs, bring that information, not the product and definitely not the receipt to the appropriate officers attention and then to the populace. If you want to do something at an event that involves more than your family and a few of your friends, talk to the event steward they are an officer too. Event stewards are Deputy Seneschals. They have taken on the responsibility, the time-consuming demanding job of putting on the event, so they get the right to decide what will and will not happen at this event (with the support of the Baron and their fellow officers).
If people other than the designated officers, stewards or Baron start making decisions or purchases, contact with sites, vendors, our bank or any other entity we do business with; it is entirely possible they will duplicate, confuse, damage, screw-up, change or end an agreement the Barony may have. Go through the appropriate channels; make the effort to talk to officers to find out what is going on. Do NOT speak for the Barony under any circumstances.
For example, if everyone took it upon themselves to email and/or call our benefactor Don Shamino to ask questions about his lands, the next event, his favorite liquor, the color of his Ladys eyes, or whatever
Hes going to get tired of us, very, very quickly. We do not want to damage the wonderfully generous relationship we have with him right now. We do not want to become a nuisance that it is easier for him to do without.
Another example, if someone were to call Darkwood Armory to price rapiers and found out they were on sale and decided to purchase three, one for themselves and two for the Barony. They would become the owner of three rapiers, because the Rapier Marshal has already spent his or her rapier budget for this year or plans to spend it on gorgets. If this person then turns around and tries to return those rapiers bought in the name of the Barony to Darkwood; the Baronys relationship with that vendor might be damaged or ended.
Ladies and gentlemen, please think before you act. Put yourselves in the shoes of the officer or steward who gets blindsided with the fact someone else from the Barony without having to file reports, take a warranting or authorization class, struggle to stay within a budget, has taken the decision and the authority out of their hands.
When in doubt ask an officer: Can I do this? Should I do this? Do you want me to do this? Is there anything I can do? How do I become your Deputy?
If you have any questions regarding this email, please feel free to contact me.
