[Bryn-gwlad] SCA Reality v. Virtual RPG

Rhiannon, I would *really* like to think that as well, but...

Having listened to "World of Warcraft" "No [joke], there I was" and
"Second Life" romance stories at the last 2 events I've been to (Queen's
Champion and Steppes Artisan), alas, that's just not the case.

Same for "Dungeon's and Dragons", "Firefly", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
and "Star Wars"...just to name a few. Stories and experiences from
these other pastimes have *dominated* the last two events I've been to.
Why folks feel compelled to draw me into them, I will never understand.

Not to mention the shouted references to "eBay" and the preponderance of
plastic golf club carriers on the tourney field, someone explaining the
details of what a "server restart" entails and Peers who don't
understand the importance of attempting to stay in persona during an
event.***

With events like that, I can certainly see why folks prefer to stay at
home and play WoW.

Now, all that being said, I will continue to try to teach people to
"ROAR" because *that* is what I think the core value of the SCA is. If
that means that folks won't come talk to me because I'm one of those
"persona people" and they are afraid of me, well, then I have a lot of
work ahead.

***(all of these references are to folks from Bryn Gwlad. I am not
trying to call you out publically. I know who you are...you know who
you are. No need to respond on this list to "out" yourself so that
everyone else knows who you are either.)

I don't care how good an online rpg might be, you can't get quality
hugs.
And then there's the "No [joke], there I was" stories. Feats that move
the
heart and imbed themselves in collective memory to become stories to
tell
others are never, in my experience, found online. The experience of
watching one mighty fighter holding a bridge during a battle does not
get
immortalized when happening in a virtual world.

Case in point....why pack up all your SCA stuff and go to an event for a

full weekend when you can role-play *much more effectively* with your
friends in a online environment in the comfort of your own home?

Something to consider moving forward.
