I would like to address the issue of choosing between activities and events.
This is not just applicable to the SCA but life. I remember a post about 6
months ago where someone asked about moving guild activities to make it more
convenient for non-working/stay at home parents/people who work at night,
etc. They mentioned having to juggle interests. I responded that I have to
juggle interests as well. I have daughter in Girl Scouts, she starts
cheerleading this year, and who knows what else is on the horizon. Then I
have my SCA activities, a social life outside the SCA, and work. I'm
constantly having to juggle and make choices as to which activity I'm going
to attend or not attend. Sometimes I miss an SCA event because of an
activity with the Girl Scout troop or a mundane family gathering. For
example, this year I have to choose between Gothic or going to my sister's
bachelorette party. I don't attend Tuesday nights as often as I would like
because I have to go home, get my daughter, and feed her dinner. By the time
I go all the way home and then come back to PiP I'd only be there an hour
before I have to come back and get her ready for school the next day.

So, those are my personal choices. Within the SCA, there are a myriad of
activities and interests I would love to pursue - calligraphy and
illumination, research, costuming, fighting, brewing, cooking, stewarding an
event, just to name a few. However, I know that my time is limited and I
have to make choices. I tend to be more of a Jane of all trades, master of
none because I don't the time necessary to devote to becoming a master at
one. It is up to each individual to establish their own priorities and be
true to themselves when making those choices. I rarely get to do everything
I want at an event but I still have a great time.

Just my thoughts,
Ysabeau the chronically time challenged
