Hmmm.

I seem to remember a period of time where challenge tournaments were common
and I kind of enjoyed watching them. Basically, the fighters put their
shields out if they wanted to fight and someone would come and "pick a
fight" with them. It was always interesting to hear the challenge and made
the fight more interesting. It was based on a weighted point system and the
fighter at the end of the day with the most points won (I think). The
fighters were on the honor system to exchange tokens so there wasn't a list
mistress per se, just someone that tallied the points/counted the tokens at
the end of the day. There were fields with marshals set up and waiting.
Sometimes the fighters had to wait for a field but I don't think it was a
big deal. If we did something similar to that, then the chivalric and rapier
combat could go on simultaneously. If someone wanted to fight on both
fields, they could put out two shields. I'll confess to ignorance on how
much of a change in armor would be required to go from one field to the
other but maybe something could be worked out? I guess the drawback could be
that someone who isn't the best skilled fighter could win by working the
system somehow!

One of my favorite memories goes way back to an event in Raven's Fort (I
think). A fairly new, unbelted fighter was walking along looking at the
shields. He loudly asked "Who's the white pig?" while pointing at Duchess
Rowan's white bear shield. She heard him and slowly turned just as someone
told him.he went running to turn his shield around. She stalked back and
forth in front of the pavilion, waiting.he finally gathered his courage and
went out to the field. I think the fight lasted all of 10 seconds and he had
a Technicolor bruise to remember it by. Granted, I could have some of the
details wrong.it was a long time ago.
