There is always the fallback position of "mundane" clothing to indicate what we consider modern clothing. *wink*

Salut cozyns,
I respectfully disagree. On the one hand, I agree that it would be a
misguided anachronism if you used it in persona. The point is we're not--in
our persona voices--using the word 'garb' as a medievalism for 'clothing.'
We're using the word garb in mundane discussions that reference our medieval
clothing. Garb, as I noted previously, is convenient shorthand for medieval
clothing. One syllable replacing four. More precisely, five syllables:
medieval-style clothing (what little actual medieval clothing remains intact
is kept in museums, in hermetically-sealed cases, and is on the verge of
falling apart).
Let's review the manner in which this discussion keeps cropping up. Someone
with experience in SCA matters is preparing to attend a quasi-official SCA
function and asks, "Should I wear garb for this?" A feisty antigarbist
responds with some bit of sarcasm like, "Why would you want to wear a sheaf
of wheat?"
Clearly, if the person in question could not have been asking the question
in persona. In persona, why would anyone ask, "Should I wear clothing
appropriate for this day and age?"
All the other words folks have dug up will work fine if all you want is a
synonym for clothing. SCAers have used 'garb' because the term is generally
considered an archaism. So, it turns out it's not anachronistic enough to be
precise. Who's looking for precision? I'm just looking for a short word that
is generally recognized to mean medieval-style clothing.
En Lyonel
